Green Navigation Joins SWOPP 3 Benchmark

Green Navigation has joined SWOPP 3, RISE’s active industry benchmark on weather routing and speed optimization for wind-powered and wind-assisted ships. The project compares anonymized results from participating teams using a shared test case, a generic cargo vessel with wing sails.

For us, this is a strong test bed. It lets us evaluate our new BERS algorithm in demanding voyage scenarios. It also lets us pair that algorithm with real consumption models that account for both wind and waves.

That matters because routing for wind-powered ships is not only about finding a shorter path. It is also about choosing the right speed and the right route as conditions change. In SWOPP 3, participants compare savings from speed optimization alone and from combining speed optimization with weather routing.

So far, the early signals are very encouraging. We do not want to reveal too much while the benchmark is still ongoing. However, in several scenarios, the combination of our new algorithm and RISE’s consumption model is already delivering savings above 40%.

SWOPP 3 began with an online kickoff in December 2025. Results were submitted at the end of March 2026, and the final discussion is scheduled for June 2, 2026, in Gothenburg, in connection with the Innovsail conference.

We are glad to be part of this initiative. It brings together leading organizations working on performance prediction, speed optimization, and weather routing for wind-powered shipping. For Green Navigation, it is a valuable chance to test new methods, compare approaches, and keep improving the tools that support cleaner and more efficient navigation at sea.
